At Mobile World Congress 2019, the Samsung brand marked the vanguard with its Galaxy Fold foldable phone. But beyond this groundbreaking technology, the digital Oppo company showed a superlative innovation that will soon be adapted to smartphones.
Oppo is achieving high levels of mobile awareness due to remarkable advances in recent years. He originally created the 5x optical zoom lens that used a periscope design. Later it was the turn of the Find X with its motorized camera, and at the last Mobile World Congress the company introduced the 10x optical zoom to the world.
Oppo is a Chinese consumer electronics and mobile communications company, known for its smartphones, Blu-ray players and other electronic devices. The company was the top smartphone brand in China in 2016 and ranked No. 8 globally.
To achieve 10x optical zoom in a phone, Oppo included three cameras to cover a wide range of focal lengths from 16 mm to 160 mm. There is a 48 megapixel main camera, an ultra-wide camera (equivalent to a 16 mm lens) and a telephoto lens (equivalent to a 160 mm lens). The 10x optical zoom uses a periscope and prism system similar to what Oppo pioneered with the 5x optical zoom a few years ago.
The company’s plan was initially to launch the product in the second quarter of the year. This is why Oppo displayed a demonstration to the media of the 10x optical zoom by covering it in a bulky case to hide the phone’s design. Aside from the triple camera on the back and the USB-C port on the bottom, the only thing we know about the phone is that it has a notch.
Experts concluded that the technology works, although it needs more polishing. This advance is another way in which smartphones are eliminating any to the actual camera. 10x optical zoom on a phone is overkill for most people, but at least Oppo is trying something new. Perhaps innovations like the 10x optical zoom ultimately don’t make sense in a phone, but at least it marks a strong technological path.
